Peter A. Jones - double bassist

Born in Montreal, Canada, Peter graduated from the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Music degree in performance. Principal teachers: Thomas S. Monohan (Principal Double Bass of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra) and Peter Madgett (also of the Toronto Symphony Double Bass section).

During his last two years of study at the University of Toronto, Peter was fortunate to be asked to join the bass section of the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra where he stayed for three years. It was a great experience and a time of learning the ropes in a professional orchestra.

Photos from the past Seeking further instruction on the Double Bass, Peter went to London, England to commence studies with Thomas Martin who was at the time, Principal Double Bass of the London Symphony Orchestra. While in London, Peter auditioned for the Principal Bass position in the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra - the post he has held for the past 24 years, 5 months and 15 days. (I did this for fun - the years, months and days change according to the date that you are viewing this page).

During the summer of 1991, Peter went to Girona, Spain to study with Franco Petracchi (International Double Bass Soloist and Conductor) at the “Curs Internacional d’Interpreació Musical” in Torroella de Montgri (Spain).

Aside from orchestral life, Peter has been very active as both a soloist and in chamber music. Peter has performed concertos by Koussevitsky and Dragonetti with the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra (Armando Alfonso and Sabas Calvillo conducting respectively) and Vanhal's concerto with the "Orquesta Clasica de La Laguna" (Mark Peters).

Chamber music activities have included all the great works that have included the doublebass. Works such as Schubert's "Trout" quintet, Dittersdorf's for duo for viola and doublebass, the equally famous "Duo" for violoncello and doublebass by G. Rossini ... just to start a long list of publicly performed chamber music works.

As well as his artistic carreer as a Double Bass player, Peter taught at the "Conservatorio Superior de Música de Tenerife" for more than twenty years. His students are working all over Spain and Europe in both symphony orchestras and conservatories. During his years as a teacher, Peter developed and published a method of scale study for the Double Bass based on the work of the famous violinist and pedagogue Carl Flesch.

The instruments shown in the photos on this page are two fine examples of English and Italian craftsmanship. The darker coloured instrument (Peter with goatee and moustache) has been attributed to the English maker Thomas Kennedy circa 1812. The lighter coloured instrument (Peter with moustache only) is an Italian doublebass attributed to Carlo Lovaro circa 1860. Peter plays on bows made by Reid Hudson, Joseph Kun and P.W. Bryant.
